23 April 2024

My fourth pastel drawing some 15 years after my last pastel drawing in 2009. This time I found that drawing details using a pastel pencil was more difficult than using lead pencils due to the softness of the pastel point.

After completing the above drawing, I did a YouTube search on pastel drawings and subscribed to

I have done a number of biro doodles of portraits as an adult, but this is my first pencil portrait since 1964.

I first tried to sketch a portrait of my brother Angus using ArtRage on my Samsung tablet, but found I got better and more rapid results using a 6B pencil on paper. I was happy with my rough sketch which captured the essence of Angus and I regret that I didn't photocopy this sketch.

I used a stump for the first time and overworked the shading which I spayed over using SpectraFix. I then did some more pencil work. The final sketch is reflective from certain angles and I am unhappy with the result compared to my original sketch.

It has been a learning experience and I will now follow the advice of the booklet "The Art of Drawing Heads and Hands" published by the Grumbacher Library.

24 April 2020 using ArtRage

Have purchased Huion 19" pen monitor. Have noticed that Portrait Artists of the Year on YouTube take up to 1 hour to sketch out a realistic likeness before proceeding with development of detail. Very few professional artists are able to create a realistic likeness within 10 minutes. My expectations have been too severe and I need to be far more patient.

Getting used to blending colours. There are many settings to experiment with to establish which approach is best for me.

My first ArtRage painting using my desktop computer version of ArtRage. I found difficulty blending colours on the swan. Later on I found out that I hadn't switched on the Natural Blending option.

No guidelines, hence right ear is too small. Left eye is a bit wonky. I am used to sketching portraits either front on or with the left ear visible.

No guidelines or pastel pencils, hence misalignment of eyes and lack of detail.

May 2008

My first ever pastel drawing. No guidelines or pastel pencils. Fixing using hairspray sand blasted the drawing and removed multiple layers of pastels.

In 2019 I found out that using a hand pump aerosol avoids damage to pastel drawings and that a fixative of SpectraFix avoids darkening of pastels.
